CASA's Radio Program

Educating Youth through Entertaining Radio-Novelas

The CASA Radio team, "From Head to Toe", began their work in 2004. Made by teenagers for teenagers, the radio programs aim to establish a channel of communication in which adolescents express their needs and fears about sexuality, reproductive health, and related issues. Radio remains the primary media source in Mexico and reaches the broadest possible listening audience in the country. CASA's live programs are broadcast weekly by the nearby Dolores Hidalgo station and are rebroadcast by the Mexican government network of 18 indigenous radio stations. These programs reach a potential listening audience of 5 million. The government network also broadcasts public announcements about professional midwifery. One program takes the form of the ever-popular telenovela, perhaps the most popular source of entertainment for young Mexicans. Through the interactions of the a familiar cast of vying families, couples, and teenagers, the programs address many of the unspoken questions of a growing adolescent. Another program is a twice-weekly magazine format show that alternates between entertainment and informative conversations among CASA promotores, listener call-ins, and MCs who interview experts in their field.

In 2007, "From Head to Toe" members received scholarships to attend a seminar on narrative journalism taught by NPR Radio correspondent and author John Burnett, and sponsored by CEPET, (Centro de Periodismo y Ética Pública/Center for Journalism and Public Ethics).

In 2006, "From Head to Toe" won a grant of $12,000 in a stiff international competition.

CASA strongly believes in the importance of radio and having youth hosts to promote its programs and goals as well as help popularize the exchange of ideas and pro-active citizenship. It hopes to launch its own radio station in addition to continuing the expansion of its collaborative relationship with the government stations. The case for a true public radio station in Mexico is overwhelmingly strong and the listening audience enormous. Learn how now...

CASA Radio MCs Prepare for Their Bi-Weekly Show
CASA Promoter and Radio Tech, Gustavo, works with CASA volunteer, Ulises, on their Bi-Weekly Show, "Break the Silence"
CASA's Radio Team accepts and trains local volunteers in the history and theory of radio, developing, mixing, editing, and producing radio programs. They receive hands-on experience with recent programs and the latest technology, and in the process, help reach the thousands of CASA's listeners with our message of self-empowerment and education. Many of the high school and college volunteers who began working at CASA a year ago to satisfy Community Service requirements at their schools continue working today.
